The Path to Wellness

The Cleansing Diet

This cleansing diet is the cornerstone of our PHD philosophy. Use it while you are waiting for your PHD food to arrive. It is the first step toward your dog's greater well-being. Many of the problems your dog may have can be solved just by following this cleansing diet exactly. You may also use this diet periodically whenever you feel that excess toxins are being released from the system (i.e. a bout of digestive upset or a skin problem that suddenly arises). We suggest this "cleansing diet" be used for at least 10-14 days. This will allow the body to release held-in toxins. If your dog is showing symptoms of allergies or gastrointestinal problems, it may be wise to continue this diet for 3-4 weeks or longer.

1. First, we recommend you fast your dog 24-36 hours. This means no solid food but plenty of fresh water (spring fed, bottled or purified) and/or chicken broth or beef broth. This will give your dog's digestive system a rest and allow the body a chance to purify more deeply. (If your dog is less than 6 months, no fast is required. If your dog is 6-18 months old, we request that you fast your dog for 12 hours.)

2. After fasting your pet, begin the cleansing diet as directed. However, days 1 and 2 are fed HALF the recommended quantities.

NOTE: Use lean meat (90% ground chuck for the average dog and 80% for the active dog). Puppies (up to 18 months), working dogs and lactating bitches should be fed 75-100% more than the above guidelines.
Treats may be used in moderation: carrot sticks, broccoli, organic raisins, parsnips, lettuce, bananas (any fresh fruit in season or any vegetable for which your dog shows a preference).
At the end of 10-14 days begin to incorporate PHD Canine Growth & Maintenance Formula into the diet by gradually replacing the oatmeal or rice with PHD Canine Growth & Maintenance Formula. (Consult our feeding guidelines for the proper quantity of food). This is a good time for you to determine how much raw diet you feel comfortable with for your pet. PHD Canine Growth & Maintenance Formula may be fed alone if desired for convenience. Ideally we recommend 50% raw meat, 40% PHD and 10% vegetables or varied leftovers as a daily proportion (by volume). This will maximize the vitality and freshness in the diet along with the assurance of needed trace and chelated minerals for your dog.
