Feeding Puppies & Older Dogs

Feeding Puppies

During the first seven months of your dog's life, he will increase his birth weight from 15 to 40 times, depending on the breed. By one year, his birth weight will increase up to 60 times and his skeletal development will be almost complete. A puppy needs approximately double the amount of food of an adult dog. The most critical period is between 4 and 7 months, the time of maximum growth.

Research has shown that if the diet is inadequate, the major organs receive their share of proteins, vitamins, minerals and nutrients but at the expense of other tissues, primarily bones and muscle. A malformation of the hip socket, known as dysplasia, appears to be linked to nutrient deficiency. The proper food can reduce or retard further degeneration and may even correct an existing problem. The right food for your growing pet is critical.

Feeding Older Dogs

Contrary to the way many dog foods are named, our LITE food is NOT a food for older dogs. In fact, we’ve been toying with the idea of changing the name to Transition food. We recommend LITE food for transitioning your dog if he or she has a problem handling a richer food because of his immune system.

Older dogs should be fed slighly less of their regular food to restore energy.

Slightly underfeeding an older dog brings back many of its youthful behaviors and results in a substantially longer life than that of siblings given more to eat. Skinny is better. Remember: Dogs, like people, tend to gain weight as they age and their metabolism slows.

If your older dog refuses to eat, which will happen at different times of the year, pay attention! It may be time to alternate your grains and meat, for example, from chicken to beef, or vice versa.

If your dog absolutely refuses to eat anything, don't panic. Going without food for a few days will help to cleanse his system. The most essential thing is to make sure he remains bright and alert and is at least drinking his normal amount of water.

As your dog ages, you may notice some behavioral changes. He may become more dependent on you. Always provide him a place where he can retreat and be undisturbed. Giving your older dog a comfortable environment is the best thing you can do.
