Unleash supplies plant and animal digestive enzymes normally acquired by eating raw and whole foods. These enzymes (Protease, amylase, lipase, cellulase, beta-Glucanase, Hemicellulase and Pectinase) are produced by the pancreas and stomach and are responsible for converting food components (protein, carbohydrates, fats, fiber and sugars) to usable forms. Nutrition can only be derived from something that can be digested, and using Unleash results in greater nutrient absorption. Without the added enzymes, only limited digestion is possible, causing allergies and gastrointestinal disorders.

There are many enzymes, which are named after the food substances they digest (ending in 'ase'). Pancreatic enzymes are protease, amylase and lipase. Enzymes that digest sugar are called sucrase; those that digest phosphorus are called phosphatase. A natural diet is abundant in enzymes, but there are dogs who, because of illness or genetically inherited diseases, are deficient in enzymes and need to have them supplemented. Older dogs benefit greatly from the addition of enzymes because, as their digestive tracts age, they digest food less efficiently.
